Sacred Space

For the last seven years, we Moon Mothers have gathered for our August full moon ceremony at the Maverick’s Beach labyrinth. Mawu CroppedLast year it was destroyed, all symmetrically placed rocks had been removed.  When I saw the devastation I was appalled and vowed to rebuild it.  With fire energy, I called upon the Moon Mothers for a labyrinth rebuilding work day.  They showed up in force and we rebuilt the sacred labyrinth on the Maverick’s Beach peninsula. 13934708_10153809589073225_7587178658680387372_nThis year it was destroyed again! What? Who? Why would anyone destroy a symmetrically beautiful, meditation labyrinth? How could anyone not see the sacredness of this labyrinth?  When I saw the destruction, I paused and remembered the words of my teacher, Amy Sullivan, “Why do you choose to swim up Stream?”  This time I was not compelled to rebuild. Perhaps the universe was telling me it’s time for a change of venue.  This year we gathered at a sacred hidden labyrinth created by Lars Howlett.

In keeping with Moon Mothers tradition, we began by calling in the energy of the seven direction with the sound of the conch.  Mother Earth01croppedThe gifts from our summer babies set the tone of calmness.

Deliberately we walked the sacred labyrinth. Keeping rhythm with our drums, we tapped into Earth’s wisdom. It was as if the labyrinth had become the universal mind, placed upon Mother Earth. As we walked, she silently informed, soothed, and satiated our souls.

Ceremony is a practice inasmuch as medicine is a practice, both are healing.  One of the most powerful effects of full moon ceremony is the self discovery, not found in an ordinary scheduled day.  The ability to be the speaker and the witness at the same time is a common occurrence during circle speak.

Mother Earth

To be truly heard by compassionate woman in a sacred space, ushers in a stong connection, both individually and collectively, to the divine feminine.

Until we meet again, walk bare foot, witness the sunrise, and smell the richness of soil.

Sincerely,  Tamara Trejo

Light as a Feather

Amy Sullivan

Amy Sullivan

I arrived late for the ceremony at La Nebbia Winery running toward the moon mothers already assembled in a circle on the grass to honor the Egyptian goddess Maat. Calling in the four directions, I was delighted to notice that everyone was donning a feather. The traditional saging and calling in of the ancestors and friends who couldn’t be with us, got me thinking of my 17-year-old kitty cat because she is starting to make her transition to the other side, so I called her in. I didn’t think Maat would mind.

Maat is the goddess of balance often depicted holding a set of scales. When you die, the myth goes, she puts a feather on one side and your heart on the other. “If your heart is heavier than the feather, you are not allowed to enter the Queendom of Heaven,” Tammy explained. “So it is our job tonight to lighten up. We all have tragedies in our lives. Woe is me,” she said dramatically swinging her hand to her brow. So first we wrote out our heaviness that we’d like to release, and one by one tossed the crumpled up papers into the fire with flare.

This was followed by writing a list of our gratitudes. That list was folded and stashed next to our hearts. Now I know what bras are for! We paired up and told our circle sisters their qualities and strengths. Even though I had not met my partner before, we knew each other on some other level and drank in the sweet nectar of acknowledgment.

Maat

As the glow of the full moon emerged through the trees, it was time for a dance, the greatest heart lightener of all. To the tune of Carole King’s “You are Beautiful as You Feel”, we formed two circles undulating and weaving Celtics knots until finally coalescing into each other.

Maat02

maat04maat05

Excitement rose as we gathered by sparkling lights in the trees surrounding a gentle fountain to tell our jokes. The mood quickly turned to bawdy and bodacious as off-color, dry and inane stories followed the goblet around the circle.

maat06

Feeling Merry (Mary) and jumping for Joy (inside joke), we closed the circle promising to meet up in spirit at 5 AM for the lunar eclipse. Funny thing was… my old kitty cat woke me up just in time to see the moon almost fully eclipsed. At that final stage, I did indeed look as though Mother Moon was wearing a feather of light on her head.

On this first full moon of the new year, we gathered to honor the infinite Goddess that resides within each of us and our pure potentiality.

mm_1-5-15

After opening ceremonies, we celebrated the woman who chose to be born in this darkest time of the year, Kellie Morlock. We offered her our love and blessings and received her beautiful song in return.mm1_5_15_02

We moved inside for a slide show and watched each Full Moon Ceremony of 2014. As the images floated by, we celebrated our year together, and then released it, creating space for the excellent (perfect) days to come.

Tammy led us in meditation as we created our most perfect day. We journaled and shared: some waking up in tropical locales, some in our own beds, some skipping around the globe. Inspiring and supporting each other as each most excellent day unfolded.

After our closing circle, we called down the moon as she crept up through the trees, sharing her Goddess light.

Enchanted April

La Nebbia Winery greets us with open arms—as dusk falls softly—under boughs of purple wisteria—reminding me of that line in Enchanted April: “To those who appreciate wisteria and sunshine”—We are here! Immense gift of ripe spring night. Our surroundings kiss us and we blush. Soft lush hills unfold in green waves—testament to the blessed recent rain. Fecund scent of earth fit to burst. Rambling roses pink and giddy. Somehow without having asked or feeling deserving I’ve arrived in a place so beautiful my body aches, breaks open—pastoral hush, sentimental rush

Sweet Leah places feathers in our hair—mine is blue with a tinge of yellow—sky with a streak of sun

I wonder who will take the largest electric blue feather—

Opening

We stand in a circle incanting our spirit ancestors.

With conch call and sacred words we bless each corner of the earth—north, east, south, west

We smudge and bless each other with fresh sage—I feel aura cleansed my every corpuscle smokes and releases up to the heavens

Lisa is an April baby—we circle round her, sing “Sha la ma, Sha la ma beta”—offer our blessings for her birth path—She gives us each a sea green rock—to cleanse and keep media at bay—giggling, we put the rocks in our bras, heart-close—to take out later by moonlight

Weave Dance

Holding hands, we make ourselves into two circles and knot ourselves up— “like a bridge over troubled waters”—winding serpentine and then unknotting—loosening—resurging into clean round whole

Our energy pours and merges; tumbles and surges—we are one knot; we are not other

Music plays gently on air—our bodies are songs without words

Cool spring evening— the fire holds our warmth—around her core we sway

Tammy teaches us, graceful and sure

Spring is here and with it comes a sense of urgency—gone are the dreamy dormant days of wintering. Now is the time for action, for manifesting ethereal—Can you feel it—dream seeds sprout real.

Our goddess this spring eve is Maat—Egyptian goddess of fairness—who, upon death

weighs our hearts against a feather, and if the feather is lighter we must

rebirth and try again to live Light

“Hold a feather in your left palm and your heart in your right—

Now weigh which is heavier”

Sage Tammy reminds us—

“Spit happens”—everyone has her share of troubled waters—but it is criminal to go through this life with a heavy heart—So you keep moving through, bending on—continuing to create

Recipe for a Light Heart

Cleanse—release past anger and wounds

Be grateful—this lightens your load

Laugh—hard to hold a heavy heart while laughing

We practice her preach—

Cleanse

Purge pain on paper then

Throw our regret into the fire and watch it burn

maat01

Grateful

Look our moon sisters in eyes and tell of what beauty we find in the looking

This giving and receiving is only of women born

“Was it hard to receive your praise?”

Consecrate gratitude on paper— place this close to breast

Laugh

Tell jokes (even though most of us admit to being terrible joke tellers)—two of us share the first jokes we ever heard—jokes from childhood, recalled—several of us share past moments of embarrassment; now able to relish our own foibles

maat04

How did I arrive here?

I am immensely blessed— not since college have I felt able to open within a group –bare souled—naked I-ed—without fear of judgment—cradled in love, light—encircled by creative-force women

We are a palimpsest of generations and stories

A patchwork godly vibrant and ever-flowing

Incantatory

“Earth my Body ~ Water my Blood ~ Air my Breath ~ and Fire my Spirit”

The sound stops, but I keep moving

“The temple bell stops, but the sound keeps coming out of the flowers”

Departure

The Moon hides from us as we wane—but her glowing can be seen over the tips of hills

By the time I reach seaside/home,

She is full—“bald and wild”—sitting in the crook of cypress—watching over my inspired newborn

Mawu Mother Earth

Sharon Guynn

Sharon Guynn

As I walked down the dusty rocky bumpy trail to Maverick’s Beach, smelling the cool fresh air, seeing the beautiful trees sway in the wind and looking upon white bird feathers peeking out on the earth’s floor, I knew I was in a profound area of nature.  Slowly approaching a beautiful stone labyrinth overlooking Half Moon Bay, there were small ships bobbing in the water, I marveled at the sight of such beauty.  Wow! This was simply magnificent for my eyes to behold.  I was in awe.

We gathered around a beautifully decorated, candle lit altar to hear the herstory of Mawu.  It was very enriching to hear about this particular Goddess.

Goddess Mawu (prounounced Mah-woo) and sometimes alternatively spelled Mahu, is a West African Mother Earth Creator Goddess, associated with both the sun and moon. She is the Goddess of the night, of joy and of motherhood as well as the ruler of the world’s, wisdom and knowledge.  She is the one who brings the cool nights to the hot African world.  Mawu is also the Goddess of motherhood, since it was she that created the first humans out of clay, and she gives humans their souls.”

“Mawu’s  themes are creativity, Universal Law, passion, abundance, birth and inspiration.  Her symbols are clay and the moon.  Mawu inspires the universe’s abundance and every dreamers imagination.

Mawu makes the land fertile.  So get yourself a seedling today and bring it into the house to welcome Mawu and her creative powers.  Name the sprout after one of Mawu’s attributes that you want to cultivate.  Each time you water or tend the plant, repeat its name and accept Mawu’s germinating energy into your spirit.  “Mother Mawu, make me whole. Help me obtain my sacred goal’

We started our Full Moon ceremony with the traditional blowing the Conch and bringing our awareness to honor the Moon.

We honored and acknowledge the August Birthday women. In celebration of their birth we offered positive affirmations of love, strength, healing, empowerment, happiness, and joy.  We formed two single lines facing one another to begin our whispering voices tradition of guiding the eyes closed, Birthday women down the protected fence like lines of women, infusing them with our empowering prose of wisdom.  The whispering voices reminded me of the all of the Goddesses whispering sweet delights and affirmations into my being.  This was a powerful experience of keeping in touch with our sense hearing.

The Birthday Women gave back to the group with gifts of homemade peanut butter cookies with a large chocolate chip in the center, beautiful flowers of our choice and lovely heart-felt Kisses were thrown through the air for all to receive.  The childlike little girl came bursting out of me with laughter, which reached deep inside my soul.

Walking the beautiful stone labyrinth was a special treat of connecting to Mawu Mother Earth.  Each foot step brought my awareness to the energy radiating from the surface.  After walking the labyrinth I was open and aware of  Mawu, and felt the energy of Mother Earth running through my body.

We prepared ourselves in a lying position on the ground, our heads facing the altar to begin our Meditation session.  To a soothing beat of a drum that vibrated throughout our connected circle I felt my body relax deeply as I focused on connecting to Mawu, Mother Earth.

1170711_521728154574871_1145224904_n

After the meditation, we shared the evenings experience by passing the talking stick, honoring the trees, personal connections, healings, rejuvenation, listening to the earth sounds, the foghorns, reflections of wisdom, and connections to Mawu, Mother Earth.

We closed our celebration by chanting the vibrational sound OM 3 times.

Super Moon in the Redwoods

Full Moon Ceremony Dedicated to the Goddess Ixchel

Ixchel came into consciousness through the ancient Mayan people.  The Mayan’s were mighty warriors and amazingly advanced astronomers. They had many Gods for different aspects of life, but only one Goddess, Ixchel.  She presided over healing and midwifery. In ancient depictions she is portrayed as a crone wearing a serpent crown on her head, with a walking stick in one hand and a basket in the other.  She is portrayed as a crone to show her wisdom, the serpent crown symbolizes her kundalini serpent, powerful and awake, the basket because she is a great weaver and the walking stick a wand.

On this most auspicious night, Super Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse, we cast our circle outside the home of Jennifer Gray in a magical meadow among the giant Redwoods.  At twilight, when the veil is thin between the worlds, we wrote powerful healing words on green fabric hearts. We then braided them into one long string to weave together a super charged prayer flag in honor of Ixchel, the Mayan healing moon Goddess.

To strengthen our connection to Ixchel, wise Dragon Crone (Amy Sullivan) lead us in a kundalini activation movement. This awakened the sleeping serpent coiled at the base of our spine. Time to clear our chakras through meditation.  We spread our blankets and laid down on our backs.  To the beat of her Shaman drum, Amy lead us deep into our bodies, focusing on each chakra, one by one, opening and clearing.  Feeling our kundalini power rise upwards while we were connected deeply to Mother Earth brought us to a state of nirvana. Upon returning from that mystical journey, I opened my eyes and saw the first star of the night in an indigo sky surround by the silhouette of Giant Redwoods. Of course I made a wish.

Fully present on every level, each women spoke of her healing actions in this world.

The Dalai Lama said

“The world will be saved by the Western woman.”

As I listened to the ladies in this circle speak of how they heal and who they mid-wife, I had a deep feeling that it is true – the Western woman will save the world.

Blue Moon

Blue Moon

Anne Turley

By Anne Turley

As I ran down the hill, a bit late, towards the sacred circle, I could see the sun setting surrounded by crimson clouds over Cypress Meadows.  Achingly beautiful.

The seven direction ritual, performed at each circle, sets the tone for a safe place to allow our inspired selves to emerge and join.  The calm and unity this brings are palpable.  This Blue moon (second full moon in one month), was another opportunity for the Moon Mothers to gather and honor the divine feminine.

This Friday was a tribute to the Nordic goddess Freya, who represents Boldness and Celebration.   Friday is named after Freya, end of the work week and time for celebration, so thank Goddess it’s Freya. Go out, be bold and celebrate!  Does that resonate or what?

Tamara Trejo, our fearless leader, reminded us that had we been meeting just 200 years ago, we would have been burned at the stake for such shenanigans.  We now have the freedom to bring the qualities of the divine feminine back into consciousness and help to heal Gaia, our beautiful jewel of a planet. We honored the bold women, who in August 1920, achieved the right vote here in America.  And so we have to honor that achievement and VOTE!

Linda Grace Frost  led us in a Moon Goddess dance which warmed us up in the cool grass and united our spirits in a new way of fun, silliness and reverence at the same time.

Then Dragon Crone (Amy Sullivan) lead us in a meditation for protection. “If you’re going to be bold you’ll need some protection,” she said.   Release fear, limitation, anger and aggression.  Exhale fogginess, depression and laziness.  Then feel the aliveness and fill ourselves with the full rainbow of colors. This meditation prepared us for circle speak.

As each woman spoke, it inspired the rest of us.  The authenticity, the wealth of experience, the commonalities, the connections we all share. When we closed the circle and called down the moon, the clouds parted and Mother Moon appeared on cue, full and beautiful over the meadow.

We returned to the Cypress Meadows Center where a nice warm fire awaited us.  We ate and drank and shared our lives with each other.  As a relative newcomer, I was struck on my very first gathering by the feeling of coming home.  Being among spiritual women on a mission to support and inspire each other is something I value very highly.
